Robin Wu (Class of 2005) & Shirley Chan (Class of 2004) - Alumni Couple

GSIS Alumni couple Robin and Shirley met during Discovery Week at GSIS. They recently had their pre-wedding shoot on campus and shared with us their fondest GSIS memories.

Name: Robin Wu

Graduating Year: Class of 2005

Years at GSIS: 11 years (1994-2005, P3 German Stream – U6)

Current city of residence: Hong Kong

Name: Shirley Chan

Graduating Year: Class of 2004

Years at GSIS: 5 years (1999-2004, F3-U6)

Current city of residence: Hong Kong

Could you introduce yourself a bit (background & profession)?

Robin: I currently spend half my time running investments of my family and the other half running my own wine businesses. I used to work in finance when I graduated University in 2008. I quit the finance industry around 2017 to focus on private equity markets, which has morphed into my current job of making investments of my family money.

Shirley: I was born in Germany and “apfelsaft” was amongst the first baby words I learnt! Definitely a foodie since an early age. I spent my teenage years in Hong Kong and went to university in the UK. I now work in equity derivatives and financing in the banking industry.

Tell us how you met? Was it love at first sight?

Robin & Shirley: We met on “Discovery Week '' when we went on the same trip together (to Germany under Frau Zieger’s watch). We did not immediately start dating, but started doing so within that year (RW’s L6 and SC’s U6 year). This was back in 2003.

You recently celebrated your wedding. Congratulations! Tell us more about your wedding day?

Robin & Shirley: Thank you! We are grateful that despite the current COVID restrictions, we got married in front of our parents and our dear bridal team, on the anniversary date of when we first met. Some of our closest GSIS friends came to share our joy at the Cotton Tree Drive Registry. A GSIS alumni caught the bouquet and there was no lack of cheering-on for the next alumni to get married!

How did it feel to be back on campus at GSIS for your pre wedding shoot?

Robin & Shirley: Very happy! Definitely the best set of photos we took as we were constantly smiling and everything felt so much more natural. Still weird to see some of the changes the school has made though. It’s very nostalgic reminiscing about the locations of certain classrooms, buildings, facilities! The new facilities look amazing and would’ve wanted to give them a try back as a student ourselves!

Tell us about your time at GSIS. Did you enjoy your school days?

Robin: It’s basically the only school I went to in HK, and one of 3 schools I went to in my life (1 other being in Germany, and university in London). I’d say it’s where I met most of my friends (and my wife!), so certainly the best period of my life. I still have many fond memories of specific incidents in school that would be too long to mention here!

Shirley: It was a very memorable time. It's amazing how much mischievous fun and jokes went around while the class still got grades with flying colours. We used to hang out not only with our own class, but also with those older and younger than us, so you can imagine how lively it was during lunch break!

What was your most memorable GSIS moment?

Robin: For my personal safety, I will have to say when I met my wife! Truthfully, with how long I was at the school, there are too many to count.

Shirley: That’s so sweet Robin. It was when we first met as well

Which friends or teachers that you met at GSIS have you stayed in touch with?

Robin: Actually my best man is a friend from GSIS since P3. Two other groomsmen are my classmates in GSIS and a third is the husband of a classmate. So I would say I still stay very much in touch with my friends from GSIS!

Shirley: My bridesmaid is a Class of 2006 Alumni, and some of my classmates now work in the same bank as me. The GSIS community is tight!
